Sustainable Amazon Peru / Amazonia Sostenible Peru
In 2021 we – Wilfredo Arizabal A., Soledad Vargas A., Ulrike M. Maennig and Chaska Huaman M. – have decided to found a nonprofit Organization – Amazonia Sostenible Peru with the purpose of contributing to a sustainable development in the Manu area.
Working in the area for many years we are familiar with the situation of the local communities, which experience frequent problems with deforestation as well as problems with their small-scale agriculture.
We called for a first Workshop with the locals in autumn 2021 to get in touch with the locals and assess the current situation. The first step was to inquire about problems and needs of the community members of Atalaya and Carbon, located in the Cultural Zone of the Manu Biosphere Reserve.
At a follow up meeting were able to find 24 participants to sign up and participate in a small-scale reforestation project on their properties.
Technical support was given by Jorge Ochoa Chino, who runs a tree nursery together with his wife Yolanda and provided different native tree species for the reforestation project.
In December 2021 we were able to deliver the first 100 tree seedlings to each participant of the project to be planted on their land, with the technical assistance and supervision of Jorge Ochoa C.
Here are some photos from the meetings and handover of the plants to different community members.
